I have just found out that some of my ancestors came from Cambourne and worked in the copper mines - the Vials and the Osbornes c1820-1860. Thank you for your website. I have found it very interesting.
Hi David. The article is complete. It may be that you accessed it via the 'cached page' facility available during a Google search or similar, and these caches will only contain the first few hundred words. If you go to the original page it should show the complete article.
The article THE GREAT DOLCOATH Albert Bluett (1898) was most interesting - unfortunately it doesn't appear to be complete as it finishes " Half a sco … " is there any more of this article available?
I am reseaching the VIVIAN family cornish links and found the guestbook comments helpful.I am looking for information on SARAH VIVIAN whose son RICHARD was born(1719 cristened 1725) there although his father is not listed.I found the website very interesting and helpful. If you have any information regarding my quest it would be greatly appreciated.
I came across this site while browsing the internet. I found it fascinating, bringing back many memories of my home town, and the time when my parents ran a tobaccanist and sweet shop in Cross street. Of all the web sites that I have viewed I consider this as one of the best in the way that it captures the past history of the town and the people who have lived there over the years. Well done, I shall check it regularly to see what else has been added.
12 November 2008 - I now live in Porthleven, not too far away.
Came upon the site while researching my Bennetts and Vivian ancestors. Samuel Bennetts, my great great grandfather married Hannah Vivian. Her uncle was Andrew Vivian who was in partnership with Richard Trevithick. It's a very informative web site & I'm interested to hear from anyone with more info about Hannah or Samuel.
I came across this fascinating site whilst researching my family history - in particular the name Corkell. Most interested in the COCS Hon Secretary's family origins!!

It was named after S C Wilson, clerk to the former local District Council
In 1940 I was evacuated from London to live with Grandparents at Merose Cottage, Illogan Downs. I recall a ropeway running North (I think) a half mile or so behind the cottage. Any information regarding the name or location of the mine, the ropeway. Kind regards to all. PJ.

The Camborne book can be ordered directly through the Lulu publishing website at £15.99. Copies are printed as they are ordered. I hope this helps, David
I'm having problems getting hold of Chris Bond's 'Historical Descriptions of Camborne'. Even Smith's in Camborne doesn't have copies and the editor's away at present, it seems. I could order from Smith's up here in Pow Sows, but it may take a while. Ditto Amazon. Any suggestions?
I have just published a new anthology called "Historical Descriptions of Camborne" and all of the profits from the book will be donated to the Camborne Old Cornwall Society. The book is available now from Lulu (type 'lulu' and 'camborne' into a Google search and it should come up top) and will also be available online from Amazon, Blackwell, W H Smith etc as of the 1st of March.

Have never come across the tradition in Cornwall about pork that you mentioned, certainly not here in the Camborne area. Also I am not an expert in the Cornish language. Words like Marxist Leninist would be untranslatable into Cornish in any case. Perhaps other readers can enlighten us.
Two Questions:- 1) Is there a tradition in Cornwall where You do not eat pork in the months without the 'r' just like in Wales? 2)How do you say: 'Revolutionary Communist Party of Britain (Marxist-Leninist)' in Cornish?

Dear Laurie, thank you very much for getting in touch. Yes we would most definitely be interested in receiving copies of the scanned images of the Camborne postcards. What do they show? If you let me have your email address I will send you a personal email as to where to send them. Many thanks, David
