In 1940 I was evacuated from London to live with Grandparents at Merose Cottage, Illogan Downs. I recall a ropeway running North (I think) a half mile or so behind the cottage. Any information regarding the name or location of the mine, the ropeway. Kind regards to all. PJ.

The Camborne book can be ordered directly through the Lulu publishing website at £15.99. Copies are printed as they are ordered. I hope this helps, David
I'm having problems getting hold of Chris Bond's 'Historical Descriptions of Camborne'. Even Smith's in Camborne doesn't have copies and the editor's away at present, it seems. I could order from Smith's up here in Pow Sows, but it may take a while. Ditto Amazon. Any suggestions?
I have just published a new anthology called "Historical Descriptions of Camborne" and all of the profits from the book will be donated to the Camborne Old Cornwall Society. The book is available now from Lulu (type 'lulu' and 'camborne' into a Google search and it should come up top) and will also be available online from Amazon, Blackwell, W H Smith etc as of the 1st of March.

Have never come across the tradition in Cornwall about pork that you mentioned, certainly not here in the Camborne area. Also I am not an expert in the Cornish language. Words like Marxist Leninist would be untranslatable into Cornish in any case. Perhaps other readers can enlighten us.
Two Questions:- 1) Is there a tradition in Cornwall where You do not eat pork in the months without the 'r' just like in Wales? 2)How do you say: 'Revolutionary Communist Party of Britain (Marxist-Leninist)' in Cornish?

Dear Laurie, thank you very much for getting in touch. Yes we would most definitely be interested in receiving copies of the scanned images of the Camborne postcards. What do they show? If you let me have your email address I will send you a personal email as to where to send them. Many thanks, David
Hi my grandmother is from your area and I have a number of old postcards from her grandfather.are you interested in a scanned in copy of them?

Race was a farm near Treswithian, about 1 mile west of Camborne Church. If the people were christened before 1854 then it would be Camborne Church, if after 1854 either Camborne or Penponds Church which opened in that year. The Cornwall Record Office at County Hall, Truro, Cornwall, UK, TR1 3AY could supply a copy of the 1840 tithe map of the area. There might also be a Basset Estate manor map of 1806, and Ordnance Survey maps of c1880, 1906 and 1933 obtainable from them. Their contact email address is cro@cornwall.gov.uk . I hope this helps, David Thomas, Old Cornwall President.
Is there a map showing "The Race", Camborne, Cornwall I always thought it was a millrace, but maybe was a farm or something else. My ancestor Henry Vincent and wife Sarah(Sally)Michell had a number of children christened there. What church should I check for these.
Just came across this site while looking for Alexander Vivian didn't find him but enjoyed the site very much, good luck.Jill
